Snowcat Cinema is excited to be working with Welsh Women's Aid to present a series of screenings highlighting powerful works of female film-making. Each screening will include an introduction and/or Q&A.

We're starting with the phenomenal independent dystopian science-fiction movie, Born In Flames (1983). A film as incendiary as its title suggests, it explores themes of sexism, racism, classism and heterosexism, while portraying an alternative future version of America. 35 years after its release, the film still provokes and challenges its audience.

Melissa Anderson of The Village Voice wrote "this unruly, unclassifiable film — perhaps the sole entry in the hybrid genre of radical-lesbian-feminist sci-fi vérité — premiered two years into the Reagan regime, but its fury proves as bracing today as it was back when this country began its inexorable shift to the right."

Born In Flames is presented in association with Welsh Women's Aid, the national charity in Wales working to end violence against women, domestic abuse and sexual violence. The event commemorates the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and follows #16Days of activism against gender-based violence.

Welsh Women's Aid will be fund-raising at the screening, in support of the charity's work. This includes running the Wales Live Fear Free Helpline, campaigning for changes in law and policy to benefit survivors, delivering training to help prevent abuse, and supporting the national network of specialist services that deliver lifesaving and life-changing support for women, children and young people and men who have experienced abuse across Wales.
