The Hidden Fortress
1958 | Akira Kurosawa | 139 mins | B&W | Japanese (subtitled) | PG
Akira Kurosawa's classic adventure film is celebrating its 60th birthday, and we're very excited to give it a rare outing on the big screen. Recognised as a significant influence on the story and style of Star Wars, the film tells the tale of a battle-hardened general escorting a young, feisty princess across enemy lines in search of a secret base. As a standalone example of the jidaigeki genre it's brilliant, but for those with an interest in story-telling and the universal themes that repeat over and over again, it's a key work.
