The Big Sleep

Dir. Howard Hawks | 1945 | 114 mins | B&W | USA | English | PG

In an iconic performance, Humphrey Bogart plays detective Philip Marlowe, hired by a wealthy family to investigate murder, blackmail and all manner of indiscretion. 75 years on it still doesn't fully make sense, the labyrinthine plot is full of holes, dead ends and redundant threads... but so what? It's a joy to watch Bogart and Bacall's chemistry as they lap up the hardboiled dialogue, and slink about in the shadows. A masterpiece.

Why you should see it: because it’s one of the key noir works - who cares about the plot?
